On February 28, TikTok took the fight to rivals such as YouTube and Facebook as it announced an extended video duration. Back in August 2021, Geo TV reported that the short-video sharing app was considering this after some users began getting notifications for it. However, it is still a curious development for the social media company.
Why? It had risen on the shoulder of being a short-video sharing platform. Mainly, what made it so famous was that users with a short attention span could spend a long time watching several videos than on one long video that could eventually bore them. Its tactic had also worked because we saw others like Facebook introduce Reels, YouTube brought Shorts, and Snapchat offered Spotlight.
While it is not yet clear how this will play out for TikTok, it is undeniable that its product team does its research well. With each new update, its fame grows, and it continues to outshine veterans of the game. Recently, it reported 1 billion monthly users.

There are several opinions about why TikTok is bringing 10-minute videos. Macy Meyer, a CNET writer, hinted that the company wants to keep users longer on the platform with a strategy that has worked for YouTube all these years. Meanwhile, the company’s statement to The Verge only reads:
“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”
How to upload 10 minutes videos on TikTok
The company advises that users should ensure that they are using the latest version of the app. Then, you can select the video you want to upload from your gallery. Also, note that the feature is still in the rollout phase, and it may not arrive for some users until much later. Only time will tell how this move will affect the company in the long run.
