Google, in collaboration with NASA, now has an animated Doodle as their homepage logo in the Northern Hemisphere to celebrate the winter solstice and ‘great conjunction’. The winter solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles is its maximum tilt away from the Sun.
This year, 21st December 2020 marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It will be the longest night of 2020 as it is the day with the shortest period of daylight in the year.
Also, an incredible astronomic event known as the ‘great conjunction’ will take place. The great conjunction is a visual overlap of Saturn and Jupiter, our solar system’s two biggest planets in the night sky.

The great conjunction happens roughly every 20 years. Saturn and Jupiter will be within 1 degree of each other. The last time the great conjunction happened and was visible in the sky as it will be for this winter solstice was almost 800 years ago.
Google and NASA’s doodle is the organisations way of celebrating the winter solstice and the great conjunction.
They also provided tips on how best you can view this once in a lifetime event tonight;
— Look for a spot that has an unobstructed view of the sky. It could be a field or park.
— An hour after sunset, Jupiter will be easily visible as it will look like a bright star in the southwestern sky. Saturn will be slightly fainter and will appear slightly above and to the left of Jupiter. Then on the night of 21st December 2020, Jupiter will overtake it and they will reverse positions in the sky.
— Although the planets can still be seen with the n***d eye, you might want to use binoculars for more visual clarity.
