This 400 million is more than America’s total population and two times Nigeria’s 200 million population. A spokesperson from WhatsApp confirmed that the platform had more than 400 million active monthly users in India. This comes after WhatsApp confirmed it hit 200 million users two years ago.

In India, WhatsApp is the dominant messaging app used by nearly all smartphone users in the country. Meanwhile, a research firm figure estimated that India has about 450 million smartphones users in India.

There are an estimated 500 million internet users in India. A good boost for this growth would have been the fact WhatsApp now supports KaiOS. The operating system works on millions of feature phones used in India.

As of 2017, WhatsApp said it had 250 million users in India alone. The company has about 1.5 billion active users worldwide. However, it does not really have any major competitor in India. The other messaging apps used in India are Messenger, also owned by Facebook, and Hike.

Global Chief of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart said WhatsApp plans to roll out WhatsApp Pay. This is a payment service that all its users will have access to by the end of 2019. This would be a great background for its forthcoming cryptocurrency wallet, Calibra.
