The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, recently called for the ban of the online video game, Fortnite. He believes that Epic Games created the survival game to get young people addicted.
According to him, this addiction will keep people in front of the computer for as long as possible. He thought it was irresponsible and should not be allowed in the household as it has questionable benefits.
Prince Harry made the comment on 3rd April 2019, the night before the Gaming BAFTA Awards. The event, which was one of the biggest gaming nights in the UK, took place in London.
The Duke launched the social media and gaming attack to an audience at the YMCA. It was a youth charity event in West London.
Harry said the game was a time bomb waiting to happen and social media was more addictive than drugs.
Should Fortnite go?
Developed in 2017, Fortnite has since grown into a successful global game. The game has players working to survive in threatening conditions for as long as possible. The online game features a total of 100 players and lasts about 20 minutes. The free game has over 200 million registered players globally.
Players can play alone or as a part of a team. They can also play online with strangers as part of a 20-member team or four-person squad.
Doctors in the UK say they are starting to see the link between gaming and adverse physical and mental health of young people. This came after a doctor recently prescribed a two-week computer game ban on an 11-year-old boy because it was affecting him negatively.
Research has also shown that about 200 divorces cases in the UK in the first nine months of 2018 was due to addiction to online games, including Fortnite. It illustrates that it does not only affect young people negatively but adults too.
