Embattled Chinese technology giant, Huawei, has begun a four-day online event today, themed ‘Better World Summit’. The summit focuses on how the world can use technology in the fighting against the coronavirus.

Huawei and participants in the Better World Summit will also explore how to boost the world economy in the wake of the pandemic.

Guo Ping, Huawei’s rotating chairman, says the pandemic has changed how we live and work and has dealt a heavy blow to the global economy, but technology can proffer needed solutions.

“As an ICT company, it’s our responsibility to use the technology we have to help contain and defeat this pandemic. Together with our partners and customers, including carriers and enterprises of all types, we can use technological solutions to effect a positive impact on our communities,” he said.

Huawei, which is the world’s biggest telecoms equipment maker has said technology industry executives and experts from around the world will give talks during the summit. Huawei’s deputy chairman Guo Ping and South Africa’s telecoms minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams will be among the speakers.

The company is showing resilience despite pressure from western governments. In some ways, it could be said that it is being a victim of its identity.

It has so far been the biggest victim of the US-China trade war. The US has accused the company of committing espionage on behalf of China, a claim that it has severally denied. Still, the Trump-led administration has banned it in its 5G architecture and has encouraged its other allies to follow suit.

The UK government has also banned telecom companies in the country from purchasing new Huawei 5G equipment after 2020. The government told the companies that they must remove all of the Chinese company’s 5G kit from their networks by 2027.

The Better World Summit will also feature guest speakers from China Telecom, Etisalat, MTN, GSMA, and 3GPP/ETSI. However, it will be interesting to see if other technology companies will actively attend the summit considering Huawei’s current travails.

It is expected that thousands of people from more than 80 countries will be a part of the online summit. To register for the Huawei Better World Summit, click here.
