Google Isn’t Shipping The Pixel 6 With 5 Years Of Android Update Anymore

Google seems to be going back on its words after it promised the Pixel 6 will ship with 5 years of Android updates. The company now says its flagship Pixel 6 smartphones will also ship with 3 years of Android updates. Previous leaks said its Android updates will match Apple’s long updates support.

This 5 years android security leak spotted by the 9to5Google site says  “Android security updates for at least five years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US.” Google will be supporting its new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro smartphones for a long time and that’s good news.

Google now says the Pixel 6 will receive regular software updates that have security enhancements, bug fixes, system updates and new features.  It guarantees that the new flagship smartphones will get Andriod version updates until at least October 2024.

While for security updates, it guarantees that the Pixel 6 would get at least till October 2026. During Google’s Tuesday official unveiling of the Flagship smartphones, it announced they would get 5 years of security updates.

Google confirmed to tech site The Verge that Users will still get at least 3 years of OS updates, after which we’re committing to ensure that Pixels will stay up-to-date and secure,”

That means “The frequency and categories of updates will depend on the capabilities and needs of the hardware.” Well, maybe Google’s earlier claims were just marketing tactics to drive traffic.
