Intel is advising users to update their processors as Hackers have found a possible entrance. This was first seen by researchers Mark Ermolov, Dmitry Sklyarov, and Maxim Goryachy.  The group reported the vulnerability to Intel, and since then the company has released a firmware update for it.

The affected processors are Intel’s Atom, Pentium, Celeron. This vulnerability cannot be possible through online access to the processors, but only physically with hackers. Also, the researcher group said that hackers will physically bypass the processor security measures which include Bitlocker, anti-copying blocks and TPM protection.

Furthermore, the research group stressed that capable hackers can also breach Intel’s Management Engine, run unauthorized firmware and even extract data encryption keys. The process takes roughly 10 minutes and these processors will be hacked.

Speaking in an interview with Ars Technica, the group spokesperson Goryachy said

“We found out that you can extract this key from security fuses. Basically, this key is encrypted, but we also found a way to decrypt it, and it allows us to execute arbitrary code inside the management engine, extract Bitlocker/TPM keys, etc.”

Earlier, rival AMD released an update to all its chip processor powered laptops and computers. The update for its Ryzen processors fixed a vulnerability that allows hackers to leak sensitive information like passwords.

Hackers were attacking the Platform Security Processor (PSP) found in AMD’s chipset. This chipset stores sensitive information in the memory of the various operating system they ship with.

Simply, press Windows key + S, search for update and select Check for Update. Then look for windows latest update. You will also have to restart your PC to make sure this update is working up to speed. Intel is giving this vulnerability a high severity rating, quickly installing its latest firmware updates will secure your computer.
