LGBTQ Dating App Grindr Yanked Off Apple And Android Stores In China

The popular LGBTQ dating app Grindr is no longer on Apple and other Android app stores in China. This is according to reports from Bloomberg, the reporting agency says it was removed from the iOS store on January 27th. While the exact time of its removal on the Android stores is not known.

Grindr is among the world’s well-known LGBTQ dating apps, it was owned by the Chinese company “Beijing Kunlun Tech.” This is until it was sold in 2020 to US-based company San Vicente Acquisition.

Homosexuality isn’t illegal in China, but the dating app removal points to the government’s plan to erase p*********y and “ill-natured” activities. It has gone far to the government actively removing gay themes in the media and physically.

The latest crackdown by the government points to the hosting of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, which begins this week. It appears the Republic of China is scrubbing its public image. There has been no official response from Grindr on the app removal from the App stores; and Andriod stores managed by Tencent and Huawei.

China has been notorious for banning a lot of mobile applications and activities. There have been bans of gaming apps, news, deemed as “illegal.” The government recently reduced the amount of gaming time for children in the country.
