Hulu loses SNL, The Voice next-day access | HBO Max wins US soccer matches streaming right

This week’s streaming news features a story of two sides: Hulu loses right to next-day access for NBCUniversal shows like SNL and The Voice, while HBO Max gets the right to stream US soccer matches.

As for Hulu, it did nothing wrong. It is losing access to NBCUniversal shows because the production company terminated their deal in favour of its in-house streaming platform — Peacock.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter only mentions fan-favourites like Saturday Night LiveThe Voice, and American Auto as the affected shows. As the studio’s CEO Jeff Shell had said in January 2022, during an earnings call, the plan is to get Peacock more subscribers.

Hulu is getting the short end of the stick here as its next-day access to these popular shows meant that fans who missed the show (or needed to watch it again) would join the platform.

On the other side is HBO Max.

WarnerMedia, HBO Max’s parent company, announced that it had reached an eight-year deal with the United States Soccer Federation. This deal allows the streaming platform to show a minimum of 20 US national team matches annually, starting from 2023.

With World Cup qualifier games both for the men and women national teams coming up, HBO Max should expect a lot of subscribers. Its sister company, Turner Sports (owners of TBS and TNT channels), also has the right to show these matches along with friendlies, send-off matches, and special events leading up to the Olympics and World Cup.

However, the streaming rights for the actual men’s and women’s World Cup games still belong to Fox Sports.
