Google Docs crash after being found to choke on multiple conjunctions

A recent revelation in tech circles is that you can crash Google Docs by typing multiple conjunctions in this format:

 And. And. And. And. And.

And according to reports, this same thing happens when you type other similar words — Also, Therefore, And, Anyway, But, Who, Why, Besides, However, Although, Besides, Moreover, Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly, and Fourthly — in the same format.

While a Google staff confirmed that the issue did exist and that a fix was on the way, the search engine company did not explain why it occurred. However, further tests created the hypothesis that it is likely associated with the Google grammar suggestion feature. On the Hacker News forum, there is the argument that “The document does not fail when `Show grammar suggestion` is turned off.”

Besides the grammar feature, it was also clear that the error had something to do with case sensitivity because lower cases did not provide the same error.

By the end of the day, Google Support reportedly fixed the bug and released a statement to that effect. “We have fixed an issue in Docs related to repetitive use of the word ‘and.’ This fix should soon be in place for all customers,” it read.

The bug was discovered when a novelist using Google docs to write a novel was stumped by a poem in the unpublished work. While the novelist’s identity is hidden, they are friends with Eliza Callahan, a colleague of Web developer Pat Needham.
