On 18 May 2022, Elon Musk wrote a cryptic Tweet about switching from being a Democrat to a Republican and how ‘dirty tricks campaign’ against him would unfold.
In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party.
But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.
Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold … 🍿
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 18, 2022
First, this was the first time he was openly talking about his political affiliation in such humour free manner. In the past, the tech boss joked about the political atmosphere of the United States and both Democrats and Republicans were victims of his regular jibe.
This time around, it seems like he is not joking around. He even went ahead to make the above Tweet his pinned post! “Political attacks on me will escalate dramatically in coming months,” Musk said in a separate Tweet.

However, it seems that his statement was an attempt to get ahead of a damning article that Business Insider was working on. The article exposed a misconduct incidence involving a flight attendant and Elon Musk that SpaceX attempted to cover up with a $250,000 payment and a non-disclosure document.
An editor at the company Tweeted that they had reached out to Musk for a comment on the article, hours before his Tweet about a political campaign against him.
“For those interested, we reached out to the principals for comment regarding this story at ~9 a.m. eastern yesterday (Wednesday May 18),” Cook, the Insider editor, wrote.
Now, people are divided over the issue as some still believe that the article is part of the smear campaign that the eccentric billionaire was talking about. Meanwhile, others are of the opinion that he was trying to avoid looking flustered.
Note that his, “If I were inclined to engage in s****l harassment, this is unlikely to be the first time in my entire 30-year career that it comes to light,” statement does not particularly make him look innocent.
