Meta bans employees from talking about abortion at work

Employees at Facebook’s parent company Meta are banned from talking about abortion at work and on its official forum, Workplace.

In a Thursday meeting, an executive revealed that the company viewed abortion as a more controversial topic than Black Lives Matter, immigration and trans rights.

Although the policy to not talk about abortion in the workplace has been in effect since 2019, some employees want it lifted. Likely, their call to lift the ban has to do with the recent conversations that the leaked Supreme Court draft is raising.

The concerned employees have argued that if people can talk about other political matters ‘respectfully,’ then, abortion should not be a taboo.

However, the company does not share the same view when it comes to categorising politics at work. “It’s the one unique topic that kind of trips that line on a protected class pretty much in every instance,” Meta’s VP of HR, Janelle Gale, was quoted as saying during the meeting.

The distinction arises from the argument that while you can talk about several other topics safely, wen it comes to abortion, the lines are not clearly defined.

“…even if people are respectful, and they’re attempting to be respectful about their view on abortion, it can still leave people feeling like they’re being targeted based on their gender or religion,” Gale explained.

Unlike Amazon and Tesla, which have agreed to cover some expenses for pregnant employees to travel for abortions, Meta has not stated its stance on the issue yet.
