Microsoft has officially retired the Internet Explorer after almost 25 years, the last few of which it had become a relic. Starting from 15 June 2022, if you try to open the Internet Explorer, you will be redirected to Microsoft Edge.

This marks the gradual process of migrating users from the old browser to the new. Microsoft plans to permanently remove Explorer from PCs and release an update to permanently disable it with its icons.

The redirect will come in the form of a popup that tells users that the browser has been retired and allows them to continue to the Edge browser. To make it a seamless process, the company will also transfer data for users. “Your favourites, passwords, history, cookies, and other browser data will be automatically brought over to Microsoft Edge so you can seamlessly continue browsing,” Microsoft wrote.

Additionally, if you are trying to access an old site that uses ActiveX controls, you can use the “reload in IE mode” feature, which will be available in the toolbar. The feature allows you to access sites that were previously only accessible through Internet Explorer.

While the company is generally stopping support for Internet Explorer on Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT, it says it will make exceptions for the following: Windows 10 LTSC releases (including IoT) and all Windows Server versions as well as Windows 10 China Government Edition, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 with Extended Security Updates (ESUs).

“We will continue to support Internet Explorer on those versions until they go out of support,” Sean Lyndersay, general manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise, says.
