TikTok global security chief, Roland Cloutier, steps down from his role due to ‘data management changes’ and will now continue in an advisory capacity. In an internal memo, Cloutier mentioned that the short video sharing company is undergoing some changes. Of course, the news is curious as it comes at a time when there is renewed interest in users’ privacy.

It is expected that TikTok could come under another wave of data scrutiny in the US. Thus, the company could be shoring up its defences with Kim Albarella taking over from Cloutier. According to CNBC, Albarella has been a senior member of the company’s security team. He will serve as interim head of global security.

Meanwhile, Cloutier will keep advising on strategy with the business impact of security being his focus.

“With our recent announcement about data management changes in the U.S., it’s time for me to transition from my role as Global Chief Security Officer into a strategic advisory role focusing on the business impact of security and trust programs, working directly with (CEO) Shou, (ByteDance VP of Technology) Dingkin and other senior leaders,” Cloutier’s memo read.

He had joined the company from Automated Data Processing (ADP), a payroll processing company, during TikTok’s data privacy crisis in 2020. Kim Albarella has also worked for ADP for about ten years.
