South Korea’s DRX wins League of Legends World Championship

South Korean gaming team DRX won the League of Legends World Championship 2022 on Saturday after beating T1.

According to VOA, T1, also from South Korea, were favourites after winning it three times in the past. However, despite going down early, DRX recovered to emerge as champions.

The competition had been ongoing since September 29 across four cities, Mexico City (play-in), New York City (groups & quarterfinals), Atlanta (semifinals) and San Francisco (finals). Notably missing from the championship was a representative from the League of Legends Continental League because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

DRX’s victory was unexpected because the team began from the play-in stage and they had to beat several more accomplished teams on their way. The team’s Hwang “Kingen” Seong-hoon was named the MVP of the series.

“It feels like I awakened this duelist mindset in game 4 and 5, where I felt I was either going to die if I didn’t kill my enemies. Playing with such a beast mentality made me tap into my potential,” he said about his award.

The 2022 championship saw 24 teams participate for the crown, which is the highest the competition has seen (also in 2017, 2018, and 2019).

This is the first time that DRX has won the competition, although they have been competing since 2014. Their star man, Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, is said to be the oldest person to win the trophy at 26 years.

The Sports Rush says that the 2022 League of Legends World Championship winners DRX would get $489,000. About 16,000 fans watched the final at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
