Elon Musk says that accounts engaging in impersonation will now be permanently suspended without warning. The move comes after several accounts that have already been verified began changing their name to ‘Elon Musk’ and posting weird stuff. One example is that of Jeph Jacques, an American cartoonist, who attempted to troll the Twitter boss.
In a follow-up Tweet after the ‘Elon Musk’ accounts appeared everywhere on the timeline, the Twitter owner gave additional clarification on what he meant by impersonation.
“Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” will be permanently suspended. Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning,” Musk said.

It is not clear why the new Twitter rule is doing away with warning people first. Typically, users don’t read the policies, especially if they are going to be updated frequently, as we see in this case. So, for first time offenders, it makes no sense not to give them heads up on what they are doing wrong.
“This [impersonation policy] will be clearly identified as a condition for signing up to Twitter Blue. Any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark,” Elon Musk added.
His action drew backlash from many users who questioned his previous ‘Comedy is now legal on Twitter’ sentiment. It also put the ‘widespread verification’ claim under the spotlight because if everyone that can afford the $8 Twitter Blue subscription gets the badge, it would make it harder to know who is who eventually. Also, public accounts will no longer have any distinction whatsoever.
