Microsoft completed a deal to buy Lumenisity, a startup that is building hollow core fiber (HCF) cable, which makes data transfer faster.
The giant computer and software maker did not reveal how much it paid. However, in its announcement, it said that it plans to leverage Lumenisity’s innovation in expanding its ability to improve its global cloud infrastructure nd better serve its customers. It added that the technology can also be useful in other industries like healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, retail and government.
The startup’s design allows light to propagate in an air core, increasing overall speed and lower latency. It also enhances security and intrusion detection while costing lesser.

In addition, the innovative cables increases bandwidth and improves network quality with a potential for ultra-low signal loss, making it a better option for longer distance deployment without the need for repeaters.
Microsoft says that Lumenisity’s HCF cables allow liht travel 47% faster than standard silica glass, and it eliminates fiber nonlinearities and broader spectrum.
The startup was formed in 2017 by the team of Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. It has won the Best Fibre Component Product in the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) Exhibition Industry Awards, two years in a row (2021 and 2022).
Microsoft will use the organisation’s tech and team to speed up innovations in networking and infrastructure. It appears that the American company wants to sell the solutions in the future.
