Apple has applied for a patent on an Apple Pencil stylus that can identify and digitally recreate the colors and textures of real objects.

The patent application, as reported by MacRumors, describes a stylus with a color sensor, light detector, and light emitter built into the tip. According to the patent filing, the stylus can wirelessly send color sensor measurements, texture measurements, and associated angular orientation measurements to other devices like an iPad.

The stylus measures an object’s texture by detecting how light and angles interact with its surface. Also, it uses the same factors to identify the digital version of the colour.

If you are a graphics designer, you are no doubt anticipating this pen. However, this is not the first attempt at creating a stylus that can reproduce real world colours. There is the Scribble pen from 2014 which scans and replicates colours in ink and digital formats.

There are also several brands like Nix, Palette Pico, and Colour code checker can also match real world colours with their digital colour systems sRGB, CMYK, and HEX codes.

Despite this patent filing, there is no way to know if Apple will eventually come through with the product. Its last stylus, the Apple Pencil 2, was released in 2018, and this new one could be a major improvement.

Besides the colour reproduction, texture copying could help speed up work for 3D creators and even game creators. We can only cross our fingers and wait.
