For the very first time in Nigeria’s independent 59-year history, the signature of a woman, Priscilla Ekwere Eleje, is on the Naira. Eleje has been the Acting Director of Currency and Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The apex bank recently confirmed her as its Substantive Director.
She is the first Female Director of Currency in the history of the Bank. Her signature on the naira makes this another great feat. TheCable also learnt that her confirmation was on 30th August 2018. Currencies printed afterwards would carry her signature.
A CBN insider revealed that this was a result of efforts made by its Governor, Godwin Emefiele. His goal was to ensure that more women come to the table.
Ladi Kwali, Nigeria’s foremost potter, is the only woman on the naira, taking a spot at the back of the N20 note. Eleje’s signature is a way to bridge the gender gap that has so existed in Nigeria.
