Lenovo named its new 5G laptop “Project Limitless”, and it has some interesting qualities. The brand revealed the new product at the Computex 2019 event. The laptop, which is being made in collaboration with Qualcomm, will use the Snapdragon 8cx chipset. It will also support 5G connectivity.
The latest Snapdragon 8cx was unveiled in December 2018. It boasts of extreme performance and battery life for Windows on ARM devices. This new improvement is also designed to deal with some of the issues users have had with the performance of the Snapdragon PCs.
The octa-core Kryo 495 CPU has an increased 10MB cache to enable Chrome to run better. The Snapdragon 8cx will have more power that runs into days than the Snapdragon 850.
The limitless project
The Project Limitless 5G Lenovo laptop, during its announcement, showed off its fast connectivity by connecting to a sub-6GHz network. The design reveals a think and light device with a dark grey finish. The preview device’s system settings also reveal that the Snapdragon 8cx CPU is running at 2.8GHz. It also had about 16-gigabyte RAM. Furthermore, the device will be great at multitasking.
The Snapdragon 8cX, compared to Intel’s Core i5-8250U, does way better with apps like the Microsoft Edge and Word. However, Intel seemed to hold it down with PowerPoint and Excel.
One of the challenges the Snapdragon PC has so far is its compatibility. Native ARM apps are not as much as there are on the x86 versions. The implication is that programs that don’t run on ARM option like the Photoshop CC will run on an emulator in the Windows OS. However, Qualcomm says the 8cx will still run fast on these apps and the emulator lag will be unnoticeable.
The battery life is a major advantage though. The Snapdragon 8cx has about seven to eight hours more life than the Intel one.
Lenovo and Qualcomm promise to reveal more information about the product to consumers in 2020.
