Amazon recently unveiled a new feature in its app that works like Shazam, but for clothes. The app lets you find clothes you want simply by analysing a photo. Sounds cool, doesn’t it?
Customers can now upload a photograph of a fashion look that they like, and Amazon will find a closest match on its Shazam-like app. It looks like Amazon intends to carve a niche for itself as the go-to destination for fashion.
The new technology is expected to make it easier to shop on the app. The StyleSnap app unveils a new Artificial Intelligence feature in its app. It lets customers upload a photograph or the screenshot of a fashion look.
Amazon will then search for the look in the fashion segment of its site to find similar items.
It will subsequently make suggestions to the customer. The company’s worldwide consumer CEO, Jeff Wilke, said that the “simplicity of the customer experience belies the complexity of the technology behind it.”
StyleSnap will make use of technology like deep learning and computer vision to identify clothing styles in a picture. Amazon says the way the human brain works is what inspired the technology.
The technology will be able to detect different patterns, styles and shapes like flannel skirts or skater dresses.
A statement from the company said,
“Neural networks are made up of millions of artificial neurons connected to each other and can be ‘trained’ to detect images of outfits by feeding it a series of images. For example, if we feed a network thousands of images of maxi and accordion skirts, it will eventually be able to tell the difference between the two styles.”
Other stores like Asos, Target and Wayfair also have similar features on their app. However, the technology is still in its early years and could use some improvements.
Amazon has recently launched a try-before-you-buy service called Prime Wardrobe. It also launched a new fashion shopping experience called The Drop. This offers on-demand products available for only 30 hours at a time.
