68 — Roman Emperor Nero commits suicide, imploring his secretary Epaphroditos to slit his throat to evade a Senate-imposed death by flogging.

1310 — Duccio’s Maestà Altarpiece, a seminal artwork of the early Italian Renaissance, is unveiled and installed in the Siena Cathedral in Siena, Italy.

1456 — 23rd recorded perihelion passage of Halley’s Comet.

1531 — Pope Clemens VII and Francois I sign secret treaty against the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.

1534 — French explorer Jacques Cartier first sails into the mouth of St Lawrence River.

1549 — The Church of England adopts the Book of Common Prayer.

1572 — The Lost Love of Cheating Henry. The mistress of French king Henry IV was beautiful, intelligent – and pregnant. He wanted her by his side in place of his childless Queen. But fate stepped in.

1628 — The first deportation from what is now the US, Thomas Morton from Massachusetts.

1650 — The Harvard Corporation, the more powerful of the two administrative boards of Harvard establishes. It is the first legal corporation in the Americas.

1869 — Pharmacist and root beer brewer Charles E. Hires sells his first root beer, in Philadelphia.

1890 — Comic opera “Robin Hood” by Reginald De Koven, Harry B. Smith, and Clement Scott premieres in Chicago.

1902 — The first Automat restaurant opens (818 Chestnut St, Philadelphia).

1909 — Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22-year-old housewife from Hackensack, New Jersey, becomes the first woman to drive across the US, in a Maxwell 30, drives 3,800 miles from Manhattan to San Francisco in 59 days.

1923 — Brinks unveils the first armoured security vans.

1930 — Paavo Nurmi, a runner nicknamed the “Flying Finn”, runs world record 6 miles (29:36.4).

1930 — Chicago Tribune reporter Jake Lingle is killed during rush hour at the Illinois Central train station by the Leo Vincent Brothers, allegedly over a $100,000 USD gambling debt owed to Al Capone.

1931 — The first rocket-powered aircraft design patented by Robert Goddard.

1934 — The first appearance of Donald Duck in a cartoon, “The Wise Little Hen”.

1945 — Warner Bros cartoon “A Gruesome Twosome” starring Tweety premieres in the USA.

1954 — Joseph Welch asks US Senator Joseph McCarthy “Have you no sense of decency, sir?” during Senate-Army hearings.

1956 — Heavy earthquake strikes Afghanistan, 400 killed.

2014 — Laverne Cox becomes the first transgender person to appear on the cover of “Time” Magazine.
