If you own an Android device, then you know that most of the photos you take on your phone automatically go to your Google Drive. Some of you might hate or love this feature but, good or bad, it’s all about to come to an end.

 

Product managers for Google Drive, Dan Schlosser, and Google Photos, Jason Gupta, made the confirmation. They wrote in a blog post, “We’ve heard feedback that the connection between these services is confusing, so next month, we’re making some changes to simplify the experience across Drive and Photos.”

 

The changes will take effect in July 2019. Video and photos added to Google Drive will no longer appear automatically. Likewise, photos and videos added to Google Photos will no longer appear automatically on Google Drive.

 

Files deletion will no longer sync between the two apps. The product managers of the two apps explained that the “change is designed to help prevent accidental deletion of items across products.

 

 

The current system now means that users have to be more careful with photos and videos. This is because there is no more automatic backup. So users can easily lose photos if they are not careful.

 

How it works now

Google now offers a new way for people to copy videos and images from Drive to Photos. The “upload from Drive” option is coming to the Google Photos website soon. This is where users can do the upload to drive storage.

 

This also means that users will now have two versions of the same files without any link between them. Google warns that it might cause some issues with cloud storage. Because the copied item will now be a duplicate eating up spaces in double places.

 

However, if users want the same content in the two places, they are advised to use Google’s other tools. They can use the Google Backup and Sync app for Mac or Windows. Google clarifies that “items uploaded using Backup and Sync in original quality to both services will count only once towards your quota.”

 

 

However, Google allayed some fears by saying nothing will be automatically deleted in from both apps in July. Schlosser and Gupta said,

“Any photos or videos from Drive in Photos that you have uploaded prior to this change will remain in Photos. If you have a ‘Google Photos’ folder in Drive, it will remain in Drive, but will no longer update automatically.”

 

If you were used to just syncing images in your Google Photos library with your Drive folder, this may be a little inconvenient. However, Google said the tool was too confusing so they have decided to end it.
