For the first time in two decades, Oprah Winfrey is not on the cover of her O magazine. In her stead is Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT who was killed by police in Kentucky, USA on March 13.
Since it’s inception 20 years ago, O magazine cover has always featured Opray Winfrey. In the past, the magazine has featured other people on the cover alongside Winfrey — including Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGeneres.
However, the new cover features a solo shot of Taylor in a Louisville EMS shirt. According to O magazine’s Instagram page, the shot was recreated by 24-year-old artist Alexis Franklin.

Speaking on the decision to feature late Breonna Taylor on the cover O magazine, the black matriarch said:
“I think about Breonna Taylor often. She was the same age as the two daughter-girls from my school in South Africa who’ve been quarantining with Stedman and me since March. In all their conversations I feel the promise of possibilities.”
“Their whole lives shine with the light of hopefulness.” Oprah Winfrey continued. “That was taken away from Breonna in such a horrifying manner”
Imagine if three unidentified men burst into your home while you were sleeping. And your partner fired a gun to protect you. And then mayhem. What I know for sure: We can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. And that is why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of O magazine”
