The latest news on Apple tvOS feature suggests that the Apple TV will allow users to shrink down any video playing on the app. In essence, users will be able to continue browsing through other content and menus while watching a video.
The feature, which is called picture-in-picture, will be limited to the Apple TV app. It is similar to what is already in operation on YouTube. Hopefully, the feature will appear on other streaming services soon.
Users will be able to watch shows simultaneously, as is done on PlayStation Vue. On the service, you can watch four live channels at the same time.
Another feature that will be great on Netflix, HBO, Hulu and even Apple TV itself will be the ability to comment on a film. Just like on YouTube, a forum to be able to read and write comments about a film will be great.
Apple TV’s selling points
The streaming platform, Apple TV Plus is now available in over 100 countries from 13th June 2019. The idea is for users to be able to access it across a variety of platforms. That includes iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, and even Samsung smart TVs.
Users around the world are now getting the Apple TV app along with the new iOS 12.3 and tvOS 12.3 updates. They can subscribe to Apple TV channels within the TV app. In the US, the app has popular services like the HBO, SHOWTIME, Starz, MTV Hits, and the like. More services will be added around the world soon.
The subscriptions can also be shared with family and friends of up to six like with other services. They can subscribe using their Apple ID and passwords.
Another great feature is that users can download and watch shows and films online and offline. For example, HBO subscribers can download films and shows like the just concluded Game of Thrones for offline viewing.
Users will pay for the films they want and watch on demand directly from the app. They get over 150 video apps and streaming services over 100,000 iTunes films and shows. It also has an incredibly large collection of 4K HDR titles available to buy or rent.
Apple says, “The Watch Now section features Up Next, where users can quickly find and watch their favourites with activity synced across devices, as well as explore expertly curated collections based on a secure and comprehensive understanding of users’ viewing interests.”
Like with Netflix, there is a Kids section that showcases films and shows specifically for kids of all ages. There is a unique sports section too that gives notifications on sporting events.
The issues
Apple TV Plus has all these amazing things to offer but it is obviously still elitist. Unlike Netflix where subscribing gives you access to a large variety of TV shows, Apple is slightly different.
The new update that appears on the iPad was the one explored. It is crazy how a film from last year sells at $14.99. This is equal to a monthly subscription on some other platforms. Why would anyone want to pay for a film that is not particularly a blockbuster? It does not sound very cost effective, does it?
In Nigeria, for instance, a good number of people easily download films for free on certain sites online or exchange films among one another. It does not sound like a good market for Apple TV. Netflix was able to localise with its affordable monthly subscription. However, poor internet connectivity and expensive data still make its target demography relatively small.
The approach which Apple brings is really interesting. They will have to find a way to factor in local content. Netflix has been able to incorporate Nigerian content in the app, making it a major selling point in these parts.
Nigerian have options for local content with the likes of Iroko TV apps and offline downloads on Netflix. What does Apple offer that is any different or new? What niche are they carving to thrive in a local market like ours?
It does not seem likely that they will do great in Nigeria. However, with new updates and some extra features, they might just find a way around it.
