Adobe has a new iPad drawing and painting app. The company announced the app, called the Adobe Fresco, on its blog today, 18th June 2019.

The app, once called Project Gemini, will arrive sometime later in 2019. The name derives from the Italian style painting technique of applying water-based pigments to wet plaster.

The main selling point of Adobe Fresco is its Live Brushes. They work the same way paint mixes and blends in real life.

The Chief Product Officer at Adobe, Scott Belsky, says the Live Brushes use the company’s AI platform called Adobe Sensei. It is used to recreate how oils and watercolours bloom and react with one another.

Adobe Fresco will combine the features of Adobe Photoshop Sketch iPad apps and Adobe Illustrator Draw. It will let artists draw with raster brushes and vector.

The app will support Photoshop files across Creative Cloud and export to PDF for editing in Illustrator.

The toolbar layout and UI look like Adobe’s yet to be released Photoshop for iPad app. Users will be able to import their Photoshop brushes so that they can paint and draw with the brushes they are familiar with.
