The Senate committee in charge of investigating Senator Abbo’s assault of a nursing mother says that the victim did not show up at the panel.
The Chairman of the committee, Senator Sam Egwu, made this known at the plenary on Wednesday, 17th June 2019. Senator Sam, the former Governor of Ebonyi State declared all efforts made to make the victim and the shop owner appear before the committee futile.
He equally revealed that Senator Abbo also refused to honour the panel’s investigation. The senator posited that the police had detained him for 24 hours after which he had already been charged to court. He added that submission will not be made to the ad hoc committee. This is because doing so would be sub judiced.
The Chairman added that they invited the police and the Commissioner of Police. However, they also gave reasons for their inability to make submissions. The reasons included the fact that the case is in the court and sub judiced.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, presided over the plenary. He disagreed with Egwu’s request to step down the matter. He also stressed that the panel could go ahead with its work irrespective of the court case.
Following this, Chairman Egwu requested a one-week extension in submitting their report.
