Twitter is constantly exploring new ways of appealing to its users. The social networking platform is testing a new feature that encourages users to explore not just people but interests. The feature will allow Twitter users to follow topics like TV shows, sports teams and so on as users share tweets about the topics. The user’s feed will be a combination of tweets from followers and those that contain topics of interest.
Machine learning and curated by Twitter will also identify individual tweets. However, during this testing period, users can only follow sport-related interests. The feature, currently being tested on Android devices, was announced by the Twitter product manager, Rob Bishop.
Twitter makes it easier to find content on its platform even without its users knowing specific accounts to follow. The social media platform takes steps to make it easier to follow trending events like the Grammy’s or Oscars. They also often use customised emojis to complement hashtags or events.
Twitter to improve user experience
According to Twitter’s Product Lead, Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter does not plan to create topics for everything the users are interested in. They believe it will make it easy for the abuse of certain sensitive topics. Users will also have the ability to mute topics they are not interested in or TV shows they don’t want to get spoilers for.
Twitter equally explores letting users set up separate lists so that they can follow their individual interests. Users will be able to mix keywords and some accounts to create a new list of feeds that can be accessed via swiping. A product manager at Twitter, Wally Gurzynski said, “We think that altogether this will make Twitter a more powerful interest platform.”
Twitter also expressed plans to include searchable direct messages. Users will also be able to re-order photos in a tweet after they have been attached to a new post draft. It also expressed plans to add support for Apple’s Live Photos.
