YouTube is making plans to end targeted ads from the main site for videos kids may watch. This move comes after America’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) previously investigated the streaming service. The Commission subsequently found that YouTube violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). They were accused of failing to protect young users on the platform.

Research found that videos featuring children got more views averagely than others. Also, in July, the FTC issued Google a multi-million-dollar settlement pay-out. This was in response to YouTube breaking some of the commission’s rules.

Consequently, YouTube took steps to close comments on videos that had children in them. The company also limited the recommendations on videos that could put children at risk. Now, YouTube is being urged to move all children-focused content away from the main platform. Some consumers say they want children’s content to appear on the YouTube Kids app and site only.

However, YouTube and some of its content creators say that such a move could have some adverse effects. It could especially affect the platform’s entire community. It is unsure how YouTube intends to determine what content it aims at children.

YouTube has also faced criticism for refusing to take down disturbing content aimed at children. YouTube responded proactively by cutting off ads from inappropriate videos, especially on those for kids. Also, the company added 10,000 moderators to review content uploaded on to the platform.

YouTube also rolled out a stronger parental control feature earlier. It will allow adults to choose the videos and channels that their children have access to. Furthermore, kids would now need adult supervision to put up video streaming content.
