Porsche is beating itself at its own game. The luxurious automakers’ first Porsche electric vehicle has set new records. The Taycan now holds the record for the fastest lap by a four-door electric sports car. It achieved this feat at the Nürburgring motor complex in Germany.
The Porsche Taycan runs the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife course in 7 minutes and 42 seconds. However, it does this 20 seconds later than Porsche’s combustion engine cars, 911 GT2 RS and the Carrera GTS. Nissan also did the same race 14 seconds earlier in 2010 in wet conditions with its GT-R. It also comes after Chinese EV all-electric supercar, NIO EP9. Furthermore, it was over a minute and thirty seconds slower than Volkswagen’s electric racecar, the I.D. R.
Record breaker
So what makes the Taycan the first of its kind to reach this feat? It is the fact that it is a four-door car. It is not certain if this is supposed to be a deterrent to its speed. However, no other car of its kind has been able to attain such success. This may also partly be because there aren’t a lot of cars like it. It could also be because not many other four-door cars have attempted to beat the record or even see any point of it.
The Taycan was introduced four years ago, and it has been much anticipated. The car is expected to be officially released in on 4th September 2019. The new feat is clearly Porsche’s way of telling the world what the car can do. The car has other great features announced too like it being the first one to have inbuilt Apple Music.
Porsche already has over 30,000 reservations for the Taycan, which has a starting price of about $90,000 (₦32.5 million). The car’s full details are expected to be announced to the public for the first time next week.
Porsche is also about to enter its electric vehicle into the all-electric racing series, Formula E. The company will compete directly with the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz and others.
