Prince Harry And Meghan Were Behind Social Media Ads Boycotts

In a new publication, Prince Harry revealed that he and his wife, Meghan, had spoken to market leaders about their ads on social media, seeking boycotts.

Harry’s statement was published on Fast Company’s website. He mentioned that the social media world has a direct impact on the physical world. Thus, if nothing is done to control the hate being spread on the platform, it could damage society.

“The internet has enabled us to be joined together. We are now plugged into a vast nervous system that, yes, reflects our good, but too often also magnifies and fuels our bad,” he writes.

He speaks about ‘remodeling’ the digital world but acknowledges that it cannot be done by just on the outside. So, he and his wife, Meghan took it one step further by calling business leaders, marketing officers, and heads of major corporations.

Since they funded social media platforms via ads spending, if they took a stand against hate on such platforms, the companies will have no choice than to reconsider and step up their policies.

What Prince Harry wants is for these social media companies to prioritise compassion, truth, and inclusiveness. This will reduce hate, misinformation, injustice, and fearmongering.

He and Meghan’s efforts have yielded positive results. Social media companies have been announcing changes in policies to address hateful content. At the forefront of this are Facebook and Twitter. The two companies have faced massive boycotts in recent weeks.

Harry says that he is especially concerned as a father, “if we are susceptible to the coercive forces in digital spaces, then we have to ask ourselves—what does this mean for our children?”

He adds that there is limited time to reform these platforms. Thus, they have to follow the route of making stakeholders make the needed decisions.
