Microsoft announced its plans to shut down Wunderlist and transition to a new service called To-Do. But will a sale of the popular task management app keep it alive?

In the light of this information, Wunderlist founder Christian Reber offered to buy back the app from Microsoft to avoid it being shut down.

He expressed his intentions on Twitter, writing:

“Still sad Microsoft wants to shut down Wunderlist, even though people still love and use it. I’m serious Satya Nadella and Marcus Ash, please let me buy it back. Keep the team and focus on Microsoft To-Do, and no one will be angry for not shutting down Wunderlist.”

Microsoft originally acquired the cross-platform to-do list app Wunderlist in 2015. The deal was reportedly valued at between $100 million and $200 million. However, the software giant later launched its own Microsoft To-Do app. This move by Microsoft further complicated the acquisition of Wunderlist. Wunderlist’s API runs on Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft decided to rewrite everything rather than attempt to port it directly over to Azure.

Meanwhile, Wunderlist is still functional. But this may not last long. Microsoft says it plans to shut down the app once all of its features are available in Microsoft To-Do. It’s not clear exactly when that will take place, but Reber is keen to avoid it happening at all.

Reber says that he has made a “serious offer” to Microsoft to purchase the app. However, whether or not Microsoft is willing to hear him out and entertain the offer remains to be seen. He also outlined what exactly he would do if he was in charge of Wunderlist again.

There’s still no firm date on when the company plans to shut down Wunderlist. Microsoft has, however, committed to ensuring feature parity between it and To-Do before the shutdown.
