Opinion: Is Kanye West Wrong For Trying To Control Kim Kardashian’s Dressing?

Kim Kardashian is well-known for her incredible style and iconic looks on red carpets all over Hollywood. But the last episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians revealed that Kanye West might not be such a fan of Kim Kardashian’s dressing.

In one scene, Kanye whines to Kim about how her “looking too s**y” affects him as her husband. Kanye was referring to the Thierry Mugler dress that Kim wore to the MET Gala.

The entire look was designed so Kardashian would appear as though she had emerged, dripping wet, from the ocean and walked straight to the Upper East Side of Manhattan in Lucite heels without drying off.

In a shade of n**e-pink reminiscent of the inside of a seashell and adorned with iridescent beads, the latex dress clung to her hourglass figure. She even talked about the difficulties she encountered trying to achieve this “camp” look.

The reality star’s quasi-natural curves were exaggerated beyond belief with a corset, creating the illusion that her red-carpet prep involved surgically removing a rib or two.

Yet, in spite of all the effort his wife and her team put into preparing for the event, which is essentially the Oscars of the fashion world, West tried to convince her to change her look. And he decided to air his feelings the night before the Gala.

Watch the video below:

In the episode, Kanye complains over and over, giving his selfish reasons for wanting her to change her look just a day before the event. She tries to deflect, but he is determined to exert dominance. When Kanye sees that Kim isn’t budging, she storms off.

Is he wrong though?

This conversation raises a lot of red flags under any circumstances. It is especially disturbing when you consider how much Kanye has controlled his wife’s image in the past.

Up until his recent “redemption” earlier this year, Kanye sought to always highlight Kim’s body in every outfit. He routinely dressed her in skin-tight spandex outfits from his Yeezy collections.

This begs to question whether Kim was actually his muse or his personal Barbie doll. There are many instances where Kanye has behaved immaturely and possessively towards Kim.

It is disheartening to hear Kardashian talk about West’s controlling and obsessive behaviour when it comes to her style. She often frames it as something she is grateful for, a favour he did for her.

In a 2015 interview on Live with Kelly and Michael, she said, “I always thought I had really good style… Until I met my husband and he told me that I had the worst style. He was really nice about it and cleaned out my whole closet.”

He was the one that made her dress s*xy in the first place…

Beyond bullying Kim into changing her wardrobe, Kanye West specifically encouraged her, through his words and through the clothes he gave her, to embrace a s**y, bombshell persona.

Take, for example, this quote from a 2013 Harper’s Bazaar profile in which the “Life of Pablo” singer gushes about Kardashian’s propensity for Instagramming n***d selfies.

“I love her n**e selfies. Like, I love the ones from the side, the back ones, and the front,” he told Bazaar. “I just love seeing her n***d; I love n****y.”

In the same interview, he hilariously remarked, “I think it’s important for Kim to have her figure. To not show it would be like Adele not singing.”

He objectified her through song lyrics and even had her straddle a motorcycle, completely n***d, in the 2013 “Bound 2” music video, while he appeared to be fully clothed in a tie-dyed t-shirt.

It is, then, particularly hypocritical for the rapper to take issue with Kim’s MET Gala outfit. It is pretentious and controlling for Kanye to want her to align her style to suit his newfound spiritual awakening.

What Kanye is trying to say, in essence, is that Kim does not have the autonomy to be s*xy when she wants, but rather when he wants. And honestly, that is a sad load of bullsh*t.
