TD Africa, Sub Saharan Africa’s leading technology, lifestyle and solutions distributor, has finalised plans to launch an assembly plant in Lagos, Nigeria, targeting international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). It announced the development via a video on the popular social network, Instagram.
The foremost distribution company has remained in the forefront of leading technology diffusion in the region, bringing a suite of cutting-edge products, solutions and innovations to the doorstep of millions. TD Africa is opening up the factory with the production of Samsung TVs. Already, it has facilities in place that can assemble between 43 inch to 65 inch TV sets.
In a chat with Plat4om, Karthik Ramachandran, who will be in charge of operations at the plant, disclosed that operations will begin with 40 employees. With this staff strength and available facilities, he revealed that the factory can assemble 300 TVs in eight hours.

However, with increased demands in the future, the number of employees will increase. This will also positively impact the speed of production, taking it higher than the initial 300 units per eight-hour mark.
Also, the assembly plant first will go a long way in meeting huge demands from consumers within Nigeria. However, Ramachandran is positive that soon, the plant will supply products to other markets in West Africa. This includes countries such as Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and others.
This is because an assembly plant inside Nigeria will attract other OEMs within a short time. Karthik Ramachandran attributes this to the fact that the cost of importing materials to assemble products here in Nigeria will be considerably cheaper than that of importing finished products.
An added advantage that the TD Africa assembly plant in Lagos will bring is better pricing. Since the costs of importing products will be significantly reduced; brands will also sell at more competitive prices to consumers.
Reeling out other benefits, Karthik Ramachandran says; “It will increase employment opportunities and improve technical know-how as well.” He adds that while the assembly plant will start with TVs, it will expand into other products like refrigerators and air-conditioners, among others. This will depend on the other brands and OEMs that will expectedly be on-boarded by TD Africa to assemble their products in Nigeria.
