Huawei will be officially helping the world’s second-largest internet market, India, build its 5G network.

India will not exclude the Chinese company from the country’s forthcoming 5G trials, a senior government official confirms.

“We have taken a decision to give 5G [bandwidth] for trials to all the players,” India’s telecom minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said at an event in New Delhi.

He added:

“5G trials will be done with all vendors and operators. We have taken an in-principle decision to give 5G spectrum for trials.”

Asked about Huawei, Prasad said that all vendors are invited at this stage.

The decision by India is good news for Huawei as it faces persecution against its business led by the US.

The American Government alleges that China could use Huawei products to spy on other nations. With the United States also pressuring its global allies including India to disallow the Chinese firm’s products from their 5G networks.

Huawei so far denies that its products pose a national security risk.

“We thank the Indian government for their continued faith in Huawei,” the company’s India CEO, Jay Chen said in a statement.

“We firmly believe that only technology innovations and high-quality networks will be the key to rejuvenating the Indian telecom industry,” he added.

Huawei says it has not faced any obstacles in India and even got an endorsement from the country’s top telecom executives.

“With all my engagements with the Indian government, nobody has told me that you have a problem,” Chen said in February 2019.

Huawei’s business has expanded and made a lot of profit despite the US trade embargo against it. The company claims it has signed more than 50 5G contracts around the world.

India is the second biggest internet users with more than 600 million users, second only to China.
