Instagram is introducing QR codes to its app. The app’s users can generate QR codes that can be scanned from any supporting, third-party camera apps. The feature first launched in Japan in December 2019.
Instagram wants businesses to be able to print their QR code and allow their customers to scan it and locate their Instagram accounts easily. After scanning the code the customers can buy items, follow the account and see store hours.
The QR codes function in a similar way to what Instagram called Nametags. The Nametags were internal QR-like codes that could only be scanned within the Instagram app using the device’s camera in-app. Instagram will replace the Nametags with the new QR codes feature.

To generate a QR code for your account:
— tap on the settings menu on your at the top right corner of your profile
— tap on QR code from the list of options.
— then you can save or share the image.
Instagram is not the first to do this though, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Spotify all support a form of QR Code system. However, only Twitter supports actual QR codes.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and the no-contact systems businesses are employing, it’s not hard to see the feature fit in. Businesses can simply leave out their QR Code instead of papers or brochures, allowing the customers to view their inventory with minimal contact.
The huge difference, however, is that unlike Nametags, you don’t have to open the app to scan the QR Codes.
