Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie has said that it is wrong for men to kneel before women.
The actor in an interview stated that the idea of men kneeling down to propose is against the Igbo tradition.
He further revealed that in Igbo traditional weddings, women are expected to kneel before their husbands, during the palm wine presentation.
However, nowadays, young men are quick to kneel down to propose to their girlfriend to hear her say “Yes”.
The veteran actor insisted that kneeling before a woman means the man is handing over his authority.
“Kneeling down to propose to a woman is totally wrong, it is not our lifestyle. Kneeling before a girl in Igbo tradition means you are handing over the authority to her.
“She becomes the head of the family. Marriage in Igbo tradition is when a lady gives her husband to be wine while kneeling down. What does it signify? That the man has been accepted as the husband of the lady. It is the lady who knees before the husband, not vice versa.” He said.

A lot of young people have since criticized the veteran actor for his statement.
They are of the opinion that this is the 21st century and as such people should be able to express their emotions as they choose.
Just last year, a popular Twitter user named Sugabelly had called out the veteran actor describing him as a bad actor.
Sugabelly stated that Pete Edochie was only known for playing one particular role in most of his movies.
However, reacting to the controversial statement in a chat with Punch, Edochie said he is indifferent to opinions expressed about him because they don’t make sense to him.
“I’ll be honest with you: I’m indifferent to opinions expressed about me because they don’t make sense to me. If Pete Edochie is a fantastic actor, thank you very much.
It doesn’t mean anything to me; it has absolutely nothing to do with me. If you start responding to things that don’t make sense, there is that danger of reducing yourself to the level of that person,” He said.
What is your take on this issue? Should men stop kneeling to their girlfriends when they propose or should that tradition be stopped in 2020.
