Unlike many other tech firms, Foxconn says it is not adjusting its production practices to check the Coronavirus. In a move that many are saying is both bold and risky, Apple’s Taiwan partner says it will meet production promises.
The coronavirus broke out in Wuhan, China around December 2019. So far, the virus has infected about 4,500 people across nearly four continents. With the terrifying speed with which the virus spread, mass panic broke out among both people and firms.
Some tech companies immediately put procedures in place to curtail and restrict travel to China. Facebook and its partner, Razer, for example, told employees to not travel to Chinese locations unless it is very important. They also advised those already there to come back as soon as possible.
The coronavirus has killed over a hundred people in the past weeks, yet, Foxconn seems unshaken.
Instead, in a totally opposite reaction, Foxconn has said that it is not changing production schedules. Apple’s iPhone production mostly comes from the stable of the Foxconn subsidiary Hon Hai Precision Industry in Taiwan.

This decision may put employees at risk as most of its factories are in Taiwan, a region separated from China by just a small body of water. The company says:
“Foxconn is closely monitoring the current public health challenge linked to the coronavirus and we are applying all recommended health and hygiene practices to all aspects of our operations in the affected markets.
Our facilities in China are following holiday schedules and will continue to do so until all businesses have resumed standard operating hours.”
Although it didn’t go into details, it further stated:
“As a matter of policy and for reasons of commercial sensitivity, we do not comment on our specific production practices, but we can confirm that we have measures in place to ensure that we can continue to meet all global manufacturing obligations.”
China had even allegedly closed Foxconn’s factory based in Shanghai on Monday along with Samsung’s too. This may be before it started adopting the ‘Holiday Schedules’ mentioned above.
With recent developments, it may seem that Foxconn’s bravery has been rewarded. NST reports that some patients previously diagnosed with the Coronavirus are recovering.
