It is Flashback Friday, another beautiful time to reminisce about the good memories that brought smiles to our faces. Today we remember those days of midnight calls, and how it was the rave of the moment, and why young people got drawn to this trend.

A top Nigerian telecommunication company started this trend offering free calls from 12 midnight to 5 am. Before long, other network providers in the country started offering the same service. They likely started this to stay competitive.

One set of people who fell in love with midnight calls were University students. This is because being unemployed and not earning a living, free calls afforded them the opportunity to talk for long without paying a dime.

As if that was not enough, they also introduced conference calls, where three or more people could talk on the phone. So now people could do meetings all through the night. But the truth is the conversation was usually all laughs and gist.

On the downside, a lot of young people who were active members of the midnight call clan would oversleep and go to classes late. Some would even oversleep and miss classes.

So it didn’t take long before the scheme came to an end, and young people had to look for airtime to talk to their loved ones.

Did you participate in midnight calls? Who was that special person you always called at night? Peradventure it returns, would you participate?

However, it is less likely to trend now as it did back then. This is because chat services are more popular now and do not really put a strain on people financially.
