Facebook says it is rolling a new “Quiet Mode” feature for its iOS and Android apps. The social media giants say the Quiet Mode will pause “most” push notifications for any specified timeframe. It will also remind you that it’s turned on if you try opening the site on your phone while the mode is active.
The company made the announcement as an update on its Coronavirus Newsroom post. Facebook describes Quiet Mode as a medium for users to set boundaries with the use of their time on Facebook as they adjust to new routines and working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As we all adjust to new routines and staying home, setting boundaries for how you spend your time online can be helpful. Whether it’s to help you focus on your family and friends, sleep without distraction or manage how you spend your time at home, we have tools that can help you find the right balance for how you use Facebook,” the update reads.

Facebook says you can activate or deactivate Quiet Mode as needed or schedule it to run automatically at specified times. This is particularly useful for people working from home as they could set work times for themselves, reducing the temptation to check the site.
Facebook adds that the Quiet Mode is not the same as the existing “mute push notifications”. The “mute push notification” setting only stops push notifications, leaving those within the app.
The Quiet Mode is located under Facebook’s “Your Time on Facebook” dashboard. Facebook had introduced the feature in 2018, after a push for major platforms and device makers to promote digital wellness apps.
The “Your Time on Facebook” section will also include an option to enable a weekly report. The report will inform users about how they’re managing their time.
