Samsung Electronics will begin trialing a work-from-home scheme for some employees in September 2020. The company is taking the measure because South Korea is dealing with its largest increase in COVID-19 cases since March 2020.
A company source revealed that the pilot scheme will be open to some employees at its mobile phone and consumer electronics divisions according to Reuters. However, the work-from-home scheme will be assessed and afterward, may be implemented more broadly.
An employee at the company’s mobile division tested positive for the coronavirus earlier in the week. As a consequence, the company has had to temporarily close one of its buildings. The affected building is at its headquarters in Suwon, south of Seoul.

South Korea reported 441 new COVID-19 cases as of 26th August 2020. The figure is the highest number of daily infections since March for the country. Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most of the cases are in the Seoul metropolitan area.
South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, has described the recent surge as “the biggest crisis since coronavirus came into our country”. Samsung says despite the recent surge, its production is still continuing on schedule and will trial the work-from-home scheme for the safety of its employees
