Amazon has decided to shut down its distribution centers in France following a court ruling that the company wasn’t doing enough to keep its workers safe from the coronavirus.

The court ruled that Amazon can only ship essential items and had to stop all non-essential deliveries for a month. The judge also imposed a fine of $1.1 million for every day after the ruling that Amazon ships non-essential goods.

Meanwhile, the ruling still allows Amazon to ship essential items as it works out new safety measures.

The court stated that Amazon had “failed to recognize its obligations regarding the security and health of its workers”.

After the ruling, Amazon tweeted:

“We must temporarily suspend all activity in our distribution centers in France. Given the inherent complexity of our logistical activity and the million euro fine for infraction imposed by the court, the risk of contravening the decision was too high”.

However, this decision will not halt Amazon’s activitirs in France in completely. The company says it will continue serving customers using third-party businesses.

“We will continue to serve our clients in France via third-party businesses that sell their wares on Amazon, and thanks to the strength of our global distribution network,” the company said

Amazon further insists that it had shown the court “concrete evidence” of its new measures to protect its workers in France from the spread of the coronavirus.

The company has allegedly implemented new warehouse policies across its facilities. These include a 6-foot distancing rule for employees, temperature checks and distribution of anti-bacterial products.

Amazon is also asking its warehouse workers in France to stay home. It says, “In the longer term we will evaluate the impact of this decision for them and for our French logistics network.”

The company adds that it will appeal the court’s decision. Amazon has six warehouses in France, where it employs about 10,000 people. If it goes ahead with this decision, more people will be out of work.
