Eric Schmidt, who was vital in Google’s global transformation and second CEO from 2001 to 2011, quietly left the company in February 2020. Schmidt was famously known for his “adult supervision” role during Google’s early years before handing over to co-founder, Lary page.

CNET reports that Schmidt left his “technical advisor on science and technology issues” position in February 2020. A role he officially started in January 2018 after ending a seven-year tenure as executive chairman of Google and Alphabet.

Alphabet had announced in December 2017 that Schmidt was leaving his role as Alphabet’s executive chairman to serve as an advisor focusing on science and technology issues.

“Larry, Sergey, Sundar, and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition. The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving,” Schmidt said at the time.

Perhaps, Eric Schmidt’s exit marks the end of an era for Google. In 2019, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who started Google as undergraduate students in 1998, handed over the leadership of Alphabet Sundar Pichai.

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo had said Schmidt would be “chair of a blue-ribbon commission that will reimagine how our state can Build Back Better”.

The commission will deal with updating the state’s technological infrastructure and practices during and after the coronavirus pandemic. It is to tackle telehealth, internet broadband, and remote learning issues, according to Schmidt.

Schmidt helped take Google public in 2004 in a move that made him a billionaire. According to FactSet, Schmidt owns 4.1 million shares of Alphabet Class C stock, which is worth about $5.3 billion.
