1. WhatsApp Messenger
WhatsApp Messenger returned to the top spot after its recent one place drop. The Facebook-owned messaging app has been topping this list for several weeks and looks likely to continue. The app has over 5 billion downloads on Android smartphones. It remains one of the most popular messaging applications and since it comes pre-installed in some new devices, its lead is unarguable.
Additionally, to keep its number of users high, WhatsApp has been rolling out new features for both its mobile app and even the web version.
2. GOCASH
This week, in number 2 we have a new app that offers users quick loans. The GOCASH app is relatively new having been released in September 2020. It currently as 100,000+ downloads and a 4.9-star rating on Google Play Store. It claims to offer loans as high as N300,000 with ‘low interest rate’ and ‘long time repayment’. We will advise readers to take their time before sharing sensitive info with this app. This is because it is from an unknown vendor at this time.
3. Audiomack
Audiomack is a free app that allows users to listen to songs and even download them for offline enjoyment. It offers songs in almost all categories that exists and has a feature that enables you to create your own playlist. Audiomack has premium services that requires paid subscription. The app has 10 million+ downloads and is one of the most popular streaming app in Nigeria. Audiomack recently penned a partnership with Warner Music Group, likely, this is behind its increased popularity.
4. JUMIA Online Shopping
The mobile app for online store, JUMIA, finished last week as number one on the top ten list of most downloaded Google Play Store apps in Nigeria. It has now dropped to fourth. This app recently returned after leaving the list as happening in the country pushed news apps to the forefront. It appears that the curiosity spike in Nigeria is dropping. Another reason why JUMIA Online Shopping app is seeing increasing downloads is because of its Black Friday shopping promo period.
The app has 10 million+ downloads and offers daily exclusive ‘Flash Sales’ for only app users. Also, there are other benefits that only app users can access such as treasure hunts, discounts and vouchers.

5. WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp Business stays in the top ten list of most downloaded Google Play Store app in Nigeria after weeks of leaving and returning. Unlike its parent app, it focuses on connecting business owners with their customers. It offers users a platform to create business profiles and many other functionalities. This includes managing contacts from the regular WhatsApp platform and even Facebook.
WhatsApp Business app currently has over 100 million+ downloads. While it is still outside the ‘billion downloads’ app category, its numbers are impressive.
6. Facebook Lite
A testament to the fact that poorer countries prefer the Lite versions of applications to the original version. Facebook Lite which has 5 billion+ downloads is a favourite among Facebook users who are trying to minimise the amount of the data subscription they use. Facebook Lite remains a constant feature of weekly top ten most downloaded free app on Google Play Store in Nigeria.
7. Opera News Lite
Opera News Lite dropped several spots after leading this dynamic list two weeks ago due to the recent unrest happening in Nigeria. The app is basically for reading news and is owned by Opera. It also offers personalised news and exclusive original contents as well. Additionally, Opera News Lite gives news push notification. As already mentioned, it appears that people are now shifting attention away from trending news apps.
8. Light Reader
The Light Reader app is a software that allows users read millions of books under different genres. It offers little data usage, a night mode and an eye-care mode. Additionally, ePub downloads are available on Light Reader app. Currently, the app has 1 million+ downloads on Google Play Store. While this list underwent major changes from last week, this app drops one spot to fifth spot and has added more than 500,000 users within a month.
9. Instagram
Instagram returns to the top ten list of most downloaded Google Play Store apps in Nigeria this week. It is the third Facebook-owned app on this list and one of the most popular. Instagram currently has 1 billion+ downloads. Recently, the app has been getting new features and updates to better serve users. Likely, it is attracting new users as well with its return to this list.
10. Xender
Xender rightly boasts of being the number one sharing tool and its 100 million+ downloads is proof of that. This app allows users to share videos, photos, music and every other type of file between two smartphones or a smartphone and a PC. It is convenient to use since it is wireless and its speed is also one of its major strengths.
Opera Mini, TikTok Lite, Twitter and Opera News left the list of top ten most downloaded free apps on Google Play Store in Nigeria recently. We also have notable applications outside of this list like Likee, Facebook, Twitter Lite, Snapchat, ZOOM Cloud Meetings, and Facebook.
