The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a full investigation on the r*pe allegations against Musician Oladapo Oyebanjo AKA D’banj by Seyitan Babatayo.
The investigation was ordered in response to a letter addressed to the deputy IGP by Miss Babatayo’s counsel, Mr Tommy Ojoge Daniel. The letter by the IG is titled, ‘Re: Petition Against (1) Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (Aka D’Banj) for R*pe Indecent S*xual Assault, Attempted Assault on Miss Seyitan Temidayo’
Part of the letter read:
“I forward herewith a copy of letter dated June 5, 2020 received from Ojoge, Omileye and Partners on the above underlined subject. I am to respectfully convey the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that you treat.”
Two weeks ago, Seyitan Babatayo accused D’banj of r*ping her. In a series of tweet-thread, she detailed the events that took place in December 2018. According to her, she attended an all-white rendezvous party in Eko Atlantic on December 30th.
She left to pass the night in Glee Hotel, Victoria Island and woke up to see D’banj inside her room. When she asked what he was doing there, he told her “not to be a baby” and proceeded to r*pe her.
D’banj and his team responded to the allegations by filing an N100 million defamation suit against Babatayo.

Things took a dramatic turn when journalist Kiki Mordi on Tuesday announced Seyitan and her mum were being unlawfully detained on D’banj’s orders, without access to family or legal representation.
Also, further information revealed the possibility of her being coerced to recant her accusations. All posts from her social media pages were also deleted. The following morning, an SOS that she failed to show up for a meeting with the police and was missing was raised on Twitter.
Furthermore, an hour after the red alert by twitter users who claim to be in touch with her family, a picture of D’banj and a never-before-seen promo video of his new song surfaced on her social media pages.

Many twitter users described the move as creepy. According to them, Seyitan could not have been promoting the new music of her alleged abuser.
Here are their reactions
Transparently creepy, and most certainly criminal. You can’t be tweeting with someone else’s account!

This is definitely not Seyitan and this is highly disturbing. They are pressuring and holding her to ransom and forcing her to tweet all this information. This is modern day slavery with agbero tactics. Highly unacceptable and deplorable.

You intimidated this girl and you’re using her account to promote your new song? You’re cancelled fr. Wtf???

Convener of Stand To End R*pe, Ayodeji Osowobi later tweeted that Seyitan was fine and recovering
Seyitan is fine everyone. She just wants to be alone, gather her thoughts together and recover from her overnight experience in @PoliceNG’s cell. Thank you so much for your calls, advocacy and support.💜

Meanwhile, over 15,000 persons have signed an online petition demanding that the UN relieve D’banj of his position as a UN Ambassador of peace. Many have also written to establishments like Heritage Bank, One Africa, CSA global, and other brands to sever all commercial relationships with D’banj following the alleged bullying of his accuser.
Part of the online petition written to the UN read:
“Women in Nigeria are increasingly at risk of s*xual violence and the United Nations and United Nations Women Africa as an entity committed to the empowerment of women should not be seen to associate themselves with alleged rapists, abusers, and kidnappers.”
Now that the IGP has ordered a full probe on the allegations, we hope to see better light shed on the situation as the story unfolds.
