Apple Music Launches African Rising Program Spotlighting New Artists, Debuts With Omah Lay

Apple Music, the giant music and streaming platform recently launched a music program tagged Africa rising. The show is dedicated to discovering new music talents in the African Continent.

Every two months, the Apple music editorial board will select one artist from Africa and project the artiste’s music to its subscribers in over 167 countries.

Fast-rising Nigerian artiste, Omah Lay was the first musician to be debuted on the program. Speaking on the feat, Omah Lay says it’s a dream come true.

“I have always used Apple Music, seeing my favorite artists on playlist covers and features but here I am looking pretty as Apple Music’s first Africa Rising artist. I am overwhelmed, dreams really do come true,” he said in a statement.

This will not be the first time Apple Music is spotlighting African sounds. Earlier in May, the music streaming platform collaborated with DJ Cuppy to launch its first African radio show “Africa Now Radio with Cuppy.”

 

With DJ Cuppy as host, the show spotlights the latest African sounds including genres like rap and afrobeat. It also showcases the new Angolan sound, Kudoru.

 

The Africa Rising initiative also includes an accompanying playlist featuring songs in different genres. The focus is on African new and emerging artists.

 

After Omay Lay, the program has featured Nigeria’s Rema, South Africa’s Tellaman, and Kenya’s Bensoul.
