PC shipments have grown worldwide following a resumption in manufacturing combined with the global pandemic. Reports by IDC and Garner detail that sales of PCs comprising of desktops, notebooks, and workstations have seen a surge.

IDC says PC shipments have increased by 11.2 per cent year-over-year, while Gartner says it’s a mere 2.8 per cent. Most of the increase is attributed to businesses and students working or learning remotely amidst the shelter in place orders.

“The strong demand driven by work-from-home as well as e-learning needs has surpassed previous expectations and has once again put the PC at the center of consumers’ tech portfolio.

“What remains to be seen is if this demand and high level of usage continue during a recession and into the post-COVID world since budgets are shrinking while schools and workplaces reopen,” Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobile Device Trackers said.

Both reports agree that HP and Lenovo were the clear leaders in the second quarter of 2020. Both manufacturers combining for almost half of the total market share to lead the pack. Dell is third while Apple and Asus complete the top five.

In total, There were more than 70,000 PC shipments worldwide. The numbers in both reports, however, vary with the difference being that the Gartner report does not include Chromebooks or iPads in its report. However,  IDC highlights an “intense Chromebook demand from both consumers and institutions” in Canada. Its report also cites “record demand from stay-at-home orders” for PCs in general in the US.

The caveat though is that the numbers represent PC shipments to wholesalers and channels alone. This means that the actual sales figure might even be higher as there will be an addition of existing stock to the numbers that makes its way to the final consumers.
