Why Is Your Internet Connection Bad When It Rains? – See Answers Here

People have been wondering why their internet connection becomes slower or goes down entirely when it rains. If you are one of these people, you would find satisfactory answers in this article.

First, you need to understand how an internet network or connection works. Many people in cities use wireless internet networks that are provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). MTN, Airtel, Verizon, Globacom, Spectranet are all examples of ISPs. While some use cable internet, it is not as common as the former.

Internet Service Providers use several infrastructures to be able to serve their customers better. Cell towers are among these infrastructures.

However, rain does not directly affect the wireless internet networks that ISPs provide. Yet, you will have observed that when it is raining, your internet connection becomes poor. Below, we give some of the possible causes of poor internet connections that are related to rain.

— Congestion or strained internet use is more likely to happen when it is raining. This is because many people are sheltering in place during rainy weather and a large portion of these people turn to the internet to keep themselves entertained. Thus, as you are trying to use the internet while it rains, there are more people than usual trying to use it that same period.

— Scheduled maintenance or repairs could be stalled due to adverse weather. An ISP may have noticed issues with a mast but cannot start fixing the problem because of heavy rain. This can lead to prolonged periods of bad internet connection.

— Heavy rains or storms can destroy internet amenities and lead to a poor internet connection.

Besides these reasons mentioned above, people who use wireless internet networks may move to places in buildings with thicker walls when it rains. This can reduce the penetration of wireless network and make it terrible.

Likely, you may have noticed that some parts of your home or office enable better internet connection than others. Therefore, while it is not true that rain droplets can disrupt internet connection; there are some ‘indirect’ reasons why it becomes poor when it rains.
