In response to a BBC headline that claims that the world faces a dropping fertility rate, Elon Musk says population collapse is something to worry about. However, Elon Musk mentions that it is second to the danger that AI (artificial intelligence) poses to humanity.
The Tesla and SpaceX boss had been responding to BBC’s Twitter post earlier today when he Tweeted:
Population collapse is 2nd biggest danger to civilization after AI imo
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 15, 2020
The news article that Musk commented on had speculated that by the end of the century, ‘nearly every country could have shrinking populations’ due to falling fertility rates. It says that countries like Spain, Japan, and 21 others could see their population halved by 2100.

In his opinion, while this is a problem, he also thinks that AI is a bigger threat to human life. This is not the first time that the tech CEO is saying this. In 2014 while speaking at MIT, he had called AI ‘[the] biggest existential threat’ even likening it to ‘summoning the demon’.
Again in 2018, Elon Musk repeated this fear mentioning that with the advancement being made in AI technology; it was only a matter of time before the tech becomes too powerful. He added recently that it must be properly regulated and kept in check.
This also brings to mind the recent changes that companies like IBM, Microsoft and others effected concerning facial recognition technology. These tech giants are also calling for active conversations on how to properly regulate the use of AI and facial recognition technology.
With these important discussions about humanity’s future, which do you think poses the most danger to us; a disease, technology, climate change, infertility, or something else?
