What Is MTN eSIM And How You Can Get One Where You Live

On 15th July 2020, the biggest telecommunication company in Africa, MTN announced its eSIM or e-SIM (known as Embedded SIM) service. Here you can find answers to some of the questions you may have about MTN eSIM.

The company had announced the new e-SIM on Twitter and then had popular YouTuber, Fisayo Fosudo explain the new eSIM technology in a YouTube video.

What is an eSIM? This is an option for people who do not want physical SIM cards. Using an eSIM only requires you to get it activated with an account profile. The name ‘Embedded SIM’ means that it is built into your device, like a software.

While eSIMs can generally work on smartphones, devices and wearables, MTN’s tech is limited in that regard. The company’s blog mentions that only the following devices are compatible with MTN eSIM;

— Apple iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max and XR.

— Samsung S20 series.

To activate the MTN eSIM, you have to ensure you have a compatible device first. Then, you can visit any of the MTN stores around where you live and an agent will assist you in activating the eSIM.

The eSIM is currently on a trial period and MTN says; “the eSIM trial will run for one year and is open on a first come first served basis to a limited number of subscribers who own compatible devices.

Likely, after this period, if it is feasible, the telecommunication giant will start rolling out support for other smartphones and devices. eSIMs are more comfortable because it allows you to manage more than one phone number effortlessly.

Also, since it is not physical, the chance of losing it is slim. And if you do lose your smartphone; it will be easier to retrieve allowing you immediately swap to another mobile device once you visit your network provider’s store.

Meanwhile, there are telecommunications companies, like Vodacom in Africa, that already offer eSIM. It is likely that soon, many of the popular ones will start offering the tech to customers in many other countries in the region as well.
